Lighting and retail are indissoluble: we often see something we like and then and buy it like a natural process, but the truth is that there are many factors that can influence us.

Our decision depends on our emotional state of mind at that certain moment, on how we see or how we reach the object of desire, and lights always has a big impact on how we make our decision of purchase.

The application of light sources in retail is not only limited to integrate solutions in ceilings, walls or vertical architectural element, but also involves the integration of light systems into the large horizontal spaces of the commercial space.

According to the experts, there are two very important details to consider while planning how to introduce the lighting of shops and commercial galleries:

  1. Lighting must retain client’s attention and make the store inviting for any potential customer
  2. Light must maximize the quality of individual products on windows shops, so they become more appealing, and therefore the customer feels compelled to buy them.

How much light do we need to light up a store?

Regarding the intensity of the light to illuminate a store, experts suggest applying values that never goes below 250 lux, especially for sales services’ or passageway areas, while for displays areas they recommend about 500 lux.

These lighting brackets allow customers to see products from the right distance, but this is only valid once you are inside the store. In fact, for the windows shop, which must be appreciated from the street and under natural light conditions, a much higher illuminations must be used, (between 1000 and 1500 lux). If the background is dark, it could be needed an even higher light, to avoid annoying reflections.

The right light in the right place

Flexibility is the key to light a store up. The chance of moving lights depending on the product or of being able to redirect light beams according to the layout is very important. In fact, a flexible and practical lighting solution should be preferred, because it allows retailers to follow seasonal trends evolution and always choose what is more appropriate design based on promotions or special offers.
